Moving Day Prep
Once things have settled down it is time to start thinking about your upcoming move. Here are some pointers we have from our experience!
On Closing Day
Keep in mind that on your official closing date, you typically will not see your keys until between 12 and 2pm.
Your lawyer will call you on the day of closing to let you know that the title is transferred, and the keys are ready for pick up. We will check in on closing day to find out if you have successfully closed and have keys in-hand, as most lawyers do not inform the realtor involved.
Packing
We recommend trying to sell items 6 weeks before moving if there are things that you want to get rid of but are too valuable to give away. If your moving date is approaching quickly it might be best to list them, but take them with you to your new home in order to sell them.
Moving
Since most people move towards the beginning or end of a month it is the busiest time for movers. It is beneficial to identify your moving date as soon as possible and then book your movers to ensure they have availability.
It tends to be VERY difficult to move on closing day. We do not recommend you plan to move into your place on closing day; the next day is much better for the following reasons:
Moving companies tend to run late by the end of the day. Starting to move at 3 or 5 p.m. means you are moving in well into the dark night.
Occasionally due to volume at your lawyer’s office or a slow down with funds electronically delivered from your lender to lawyer, the property may not officially close until the morning after the “closing” date. Often, you can do nothing to prevent this, but if you have movers booked and paid for but no keys, it can be an expensive problem
It gives you a chance to enter the property the evening of closing, have a good look at everything while empty, and potentially clean the space (if needed) before your belongings arrive.
